Dubai is famous for luxury shopping and its modern architecture. The skyscraper Burj Khalifa is 830 meters high and is the tallest building in the world. In 1999, one of the tallest and most luxurious hotels in the world, the Burj Al Arab, was opened. The hotel is decorated with approximately 1,790 square meters of 24-carat gold leaves.

The official language in Dubai is Arabic, but the majority of the people speak English. Approximately 85 percent of the population in Dubai is from abroad. As no income tax has to be paid in Dubai, it is a very attractive country to work and live for expatriates.

Due to the fact that the majority of the workers, who construct Dubai’s many skyscrapers, immigrated from India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh, the class divide is big. Dubai’s Artificial Palm Islands utilize sufficient sand to fill 2.5 Empire State Buildings. The Dirham became the offical currency in Dubai in 1973.

The city of Dubai has many mosques and you will hear the call of prayer continually. Although the Islam is the prevailing religion, you can also find other religious institutions, for example churches and temples.
